Field notes
Lebenslauf length and gaps that worry German HR
For many roles in Germany, two pages remain a practical ceiling for experienced candidates; one page can suffice for early careers. Density matters more than white space design trends borrowed from other markets.
Employment gaps
Unexplained months raise questions. A short factual line — parental leave, language course, relocation — is usually better than silence. Avoid defensive essays inside the Lebenslauf; save nuance for the Anschreiben if the posting invites it.
Dates and titles
German readers expect month and year. Job titles should be understandable in German even if the employer was abroad; a brief clarifying phrase in parentheses can help without inventing a new career history.
What polishing cannot hide
If responsibilities do not relate to the target role, no amount of grammar correction will create fit. Language editing and honest positioning work together; they are not substitutes for each other.
