Why German recruiters skim Anschreiben openings so fast

Hands reviewing paperwork and a laptop on a conference table

German hiring teams often decide in the first few lines whether an Anschreiben feels serious. Long autobiographies, praise for “your innovative company,” or soft openings that never name the role waste that window.

What works instead

Name the position, state one concrete match to a requirement in the Stellenausschreibung, and signal availability. Formal tone matters more than creative flourish. A sentence such as “Mit fünf Jahren Erfahrung in der Qualitätskontrolle bewerbe ich mich auf die ausgeschriebene Stelle als…” orients the reader immediately.

Common traps for non-native writers

Direct translations of English cover-letter hooks rarely land. Rhetorical questions, humour, and emotional storytelling can read unprofessional. Prefer precise verbs and short paragraphs over ornate adjectives.

A practical check before sending

Read the first six lines aloud. If a recruiter still cannot tell which vacancy you mean and which strength you lead with, rewrite those lines before polishing the rest.
