Formal “Sie” tone without sounding stiff

Most German applications still assume Sie. Non-native writers sometimes overcorrect into archaic phrasing that no contemporary HR team uses, or slip into Du because English drafts feel conversational.

Use Sie consistently. Prefer concrete statements of contribution over self-praise. Replace vague claims (“team player,” “passionate”) with examples tied to tasks in the vacancy.

Errors in articles and endings are among the fastest signals of rushed translation. When unsure, simplify the sentence structure rather than stacking subordinate clauses that multiply agreement mistakes.

When Du appears

Only switch if the employer’s own posting uses Du throughout and invites that register. Matching their choice is safer than guessing a “modern” tone.
